Green Rehabilitation Investment Project for Karakalpakstan

The problem:

The Aral Sea crisis has led to severe ecological and socio-economic challenges in the Karakalpakstan Republic. The region faces significant issues including the degradation of water resources, loss of arable land, and economic hardship for local communities reliant on agriculture. This has resulted in reduced agricultural productivity, increased poverty, and vulnerability to climate change. Farmers, entrepreneurs, and micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) involved in agriculture are struggling with inadequate infrastructure, outdated practices, and a lack of disaster-resilient livelihood models. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach to rehabilitate the environment, enhance agricultural productivity, and support sustainable livelihoods.

The solution:

To tackle these issues, InfoCapital Group LLC (ICG) was tasked with implementing a range of activities under the Green Rehabilitation Investment Project. The goal was to support the green rehabilitation of Karakalpakstan by developing and promoting climate-resilient agri-business models and providing necessary policy, financing, and investment frameworks.

ICG conducted a thorough baseline assessment and socio-economic survey to understand the needs of the local population and the current state of agricultural practices. This involved collecting data from over 1,200 respondents across four districts—Kegeyli, Bozataw, Chimbay, and Karauzyak—focusing on various stakeholders including home garden plots, dehkan farms, private farmers, and MSMEs. The survey covered a range of topics including environmental conditions, economic activities, and social impacts.

Spatial data was collected and analyzed using GIS to map land use, soil conditions, water resources, and infrastructure in the targeted districts. This spatial analysis helped in identifying key areas for intervention and optimizing resource allocation. ICG also prepared questionnaires in multiple languages to ensure comprehensive data collection.

Based on the findings, ICG developed a green rehabilitation investment plan that aimed to enhance disaster resilience, improve rural food security, and promote equitable employment. The plan included strategies for mobilizing green finance, demonstrating viable agri-business models, and supporting local entrepreneurs and farmers in adopting sustainable practices. This holistic approach was designed to rebuild the agricultural economy of Karakalpakstan and support the long-term sustainability of its communities.
