Assistance in the development of the construction of energy-efficient rural housing in Uzbekistan

The problem:

Uzbekistan's rural housing sector is rapidly expanding, but this growth has traditionally been reliant on conventional construction methods that contribute to high energy consumption and significant greenhouse gas emissions. The country's move towards sustainable development is hindered by a lack of awareness among homeowners about the benefits of energy-efficient and low-carbon housing. Despite government initiatives, such as the decree to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy sources and energy-saving technologies, the population's understanding of these concepts remains limited. This lack of awareness poses a significant challenge to the broader adoption of sustainable housing practices, which are crucial for reducing the environmental impact of rural housing and improving living conditions. The issue is further complicated by the diverse socio-economic conditions across different regions of Uzbekistan, making it essential to tailor awareness-raising efforts to specific local contexts.

The solution:

InfoCapital Group LLC (ICG) addressed the knowledge gap regarding energy-efficient and low-carbon housing in Uzbekistan. Their assignment focused on conducting a comprehensive study to assess homeowners' awareness of these concepts across 9 key regions: Fergana, Samarkand, Surkhandarya, Khorezm, Kashkadarya, Namangan, Bukhara, Tashkent, and the Republic of Karakalpakstan. Total - 1505 respondents.

The study's approach was meticulous, beginning with the identification and segmentation of target groups, including houses built under the ""Affordable Rural Housing"" program and those constructed with the participation of UNDP. The research was designed to capture gender-disaggregated data, ensuring that insights into awareness levels were inclusive and representative of the broader population.

ICG's study aimed to provide actionable insights that would inform future public awareness campaigns and policy decisions. By understanding the current level of awareness and the specific needs of different homeowner groups, ICG's work is crucial in guiding the development of targeted strategies to promote the adoption of energy-efficient and low-carbon housing. This, in turn, supports the overarching goal of transitioning Uzbekistan's rural housing sector towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly model.
